Lubiprostone : A non systemic drug.

Lubiprostone : Lubiprostone capsule contain 8mcg and 24mcg lubiprostone INN.

Mechanism of action  : Lubiprostone is a locally acting chloride chenel-2 activator that enhances a chloride-rich intestinal fluid secretion without altering sodium and potassium concentration in the serum. By increasing intestinal fluid secretion. Lubiprostone increases motility in intestine,thereby facilitating the passage of stool and alleviating symptoms associated with constipation. Additionally activation of CLC-2 by lubiprostone recovers mucosal barrier function via restoration of tight junction protein complexes.

Therapeutic Indication: Chronic idiopathic constipation , irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.

Side Effects: nausea,vomiting,loose stools,headache,dizziness etc.

Contraindication: Lubiprostone is contraindicated in patient with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

Precautions: Nausea, Diarhoea,Bowel obstructions.

Drug Interactions: based uppon the results of in vitro humen microsomestudies, there is low likelihood of drug-drug interactions.

Pregnancy and Lactation: Pregnancy category-C. Lubiprostone should be used in pregnant mother if the potential benefits justifies  the potential risk of the fetus. It is not known whethere lubiprostone is excreted in human milk.

Renal Impairment : Lubiprostone has not been studies in patients who have renal impairment.

Hepatic Impairment : No dose adjustment in patient with mild and moderate impairment.
